Kaptai National Park, situated in the Rangamati District of Bangladesh, stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1999, the park covers an expansive area of 5,464.78 hectares (13,503.8 acres), serving as a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna.
Before its designation as a national park, the area was known as Sitapahar Reserve. Originally spanning 14,448.0 acres, a portion of this land, totaling 100 acres, was allocated for the establishment of an industrial estate at Kaptai. Despite this reduction, Kaptai National Park remains a significant conservation area, located approximately 57 kilometers from Chittagong city.
The park is divided into two ranges: Kaptai Range and Karnaphuli Range, both overseen by the CHT South Forest Division. Notably, Kaptai National Park holds historical importance as the site where teak (Tectona grandis) plantations in Bangladesh were first initiated. Its forest ecosystem primarily consists of mixed evergreen forest, providing habitat for a wide array of wildlife species.
In 2009, the Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) project commenced its activities within Kaptai National Park, furthering efforts to protect and manage this vital ecological treasure.
